Extrusion granulation was used in the field of fertilizer to granulate potassium chloride in the early days. The granular (1-4mm) potassium chloride required for blending fertilizer (BB fertilizer) is basically produced by extrusion. 

In recent years, extrusion granulation used to produce compound fertilizers has developed rapidly in China.
The form of extrusion granulation can be two kinds of roller type and wheel rolling type. The roller type extrusion is firstly pressed into large pieces, and then crushed into particles, so that the device has large capacity, high particle strength, and low energy consumption. Roll extrusion is widely used abroad. The wheel rolling type is directly made into a groove-shaped shape on the surface of the roller, and extruded into shaped particles at a time. The strength of the product is low and sometimes a binder is required. It is suitable for granular fertilizers such as organic fertilizer and compound fertilizer.

The process principle of the roller extrusion granulation is: the dry materials are agglomerated into dense and hard large pieces (cakes) under pressure, which is called the extrusion process; the cakes are crushed and sieved to become granular materials. The function of squeezing is to squeeze out the air between the particles, and to make the distance between the particles close enough to generate attractive forces such as van der Waals force, adsorption force, crystal bridges, and embedded connections. The granules produced by extrusion granulation are mainly the strength of the granules formed by the force between molecules.
